Achraf Hakimi facing possible World Cup travel block after rape trial ordered for Morocco captain

Morocco could be left without Achraf Hakimi later in the World Cup, following confirmation that their captain is to stand trial for rape.

A trial was initially ordered in February; Hakimi, who captained Morocco to a 1-0 win over Scotland on Friday night, appealed against it but was unsuccessful.

The 27-year-old PSG right-back was accused by a woman of raping her at his Paris home in 2023.

Investigations began in March that year, with Hakimi consistently denying the accusations.

Posting on social media on Friday, the 98-cap defender wrote: “The justice system looked me in the eye and said, ‘If you weren’t famous, there would never have been a case.

“I chose to remain silent for years. I believed that maintaining my dignity, being patient, and trusting in the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made.

“Today, a story that isn’t mine is being told at the expense of my family, my life, and above all, the truth. I sometimes feel like I’ve become an easy target.

“I’ve been waiting for this trial since day one. And now I’m eagerly awaiting it. Finally, I’ll be able to speak.”

Despite not being convicted, confirmation of the trial could have an impact on Hakimi at this summer’s tournament as he may face difficulties entering Mexico.

Morocco are playing all three of their World Cup group games in the USA, with their final match against Haiti taking place in Atlanta on Wednesday.

But if the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations winners finish second in Group C, they will head to Monterrey in Mexico for their last 32 tie.

Should they advance as one of the best third-placed teams, there is a possibility that they will play in Mexico City in the last 32 and, if they make it that far, the last 16.

According to the website of the Mexican consul, individuals can be refused entry to the country ‘if you are subject to criminal process or have been convicted of a serious crime’.

Travel blocks

One player has already run into problems at this World Cup amid ongoing legal proceedings.

Ghana vice-captain Thomas Partey missed his side’s opening match against Panama in Toronto.

The Villarreal midfielder was blocked from coming into the country as he is due to stand trial next year on seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault – all of which he has pleaded not guilty to.

Partey’s ban was upheld by the Canadian government after the former Arsenal man appealed.

While Canada will host two games in the last 32 and one in the last 16, the way the draw pans out means Morocco will not end up playing there.
