Lionel Messi scored a hat trick for the first time at the World Cup as Argentina opened their world title defense with a 3-0 victory over Algeria in Kansas City. Monday's game will be Messi's last one as a 38-year-old, with his birthday on Wednesday. A win would put Argentina on 6 points, coupled with Jordan not beating Algeria later on Monday, and the Albiceleste would clinch top spot with head-to-head tiebreakers over the other two.

Austria currently sit 2nd in the group after they topped Jordan 3-1 in their opener. Romano Schmid, Yazan Al-Arab and Marko Arnautovic got the goals for Ralf Rangnick's side.

Argentina vs Austria prediction

Get out of Messi's way, he's still one of the few best players in the world. Julian Alvarez should return to the XI and will either benefit from all the extra attention paid to Messi, or take some away himself and free Messi up even more. Argentina vs Austria.
