The 2026 FIFA World Cup is now in full swing. There have been a host of standout players already that have caught the eye during the tournament. Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane have all laid down a marker for the tournament. Also, there are a host of other players who have also made an impression at the tournament. One of those is German midfielder Felix Nmecha. Watching Nmecha play, he looks to be tailor-made for a role in the Manchester City midfield. Nmecha has been linked with a move to City in the past but there may be little chance of City signing him this summer. However, stranger things have happened.
Felix Nmecha has been the standout midfielder for Germany at the World Cup.
Germany has already booked their place in the Round of 32 at this summer’s World Cup. They beat Curaçao 7-1 in their opening Group E fixture. Felix Nmecha opened the scoring in that match with a quality finish to set Germany on their way to an emphatic win. Nmecha was superb in Germany’s opening match as he kept possession superbly well and won his share of duels in midfield to help the four-time World Cup winners begin their tournament in a strong fashion.
Felix Nmecha’s game went up a gear as Germany beat Côte D’Ivoire 2-1 overnight to book themselves a place in the Round of 32. Germany had their hands full with a physical Côte D’Ivoire side and fell behind in the first half to a Franck Kessie tap-in. Substitute Deniz Undav bagged a brace in the second half to secure Germany a vital win and his 94th minute winner came from a sublime ball from Felix Nmecha. Nmecha’s defence-splitting ball was reminiscent of Yaya Toure in his prime and it was pivotal to Germany’s win.
Outside of his match-winning pass, Felix Nmecha showed that he could immediately slot into the Manchester City midfield with his performance against Côte D’Ivoire. The match between Germany and Côte D’Ivoire resembled a typical Premier League fixture with its physicality and end-to-end nature. Nmecha shone in midfield playing alongside Alexander Pavlovic as a number-six/number eight against a physical opponent. He almost controlled the midfield battle and his physicality and ability to win duels were impossible to ignore. Also, Nemcha was excellent in possession. He created the winner and another big chance for his team. Nemcha basically controlled the midfield in last night’s match, which isn’t easy to do in a World Cup match where the stakes are so high.
Watching Nmecha overnight, you couldn’t help but think with his size and all-around ability that he’d be a great fit into the Manchester City midfield.
It is easy to see where Felix Nmecha would fit into the Manchester City midfield but he may be unattainable.
It is easy to see how Felix Nmecha would fit into the Manchester City midfield. His game does look to complement Rodri’s and if City do sign Elliot Anderson, Nmecha would in theory work well with the England international. However, like all things that seem too good to be true, there may be little chance of Manchester City signing Nmecha this summer.
Felix Nmecha signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund until 2030 back in March. Also, Fabrizio Romano reported at the time that Manchester City had no interest in signing the German international. That may change if Nmecha’s impressive form at the World Cup continues. Although, Borussia Dortmund would not contemplate selling Nmecha for a cut-price fee, or if at all.
However, a new report indicates that Felix Nmecha could be open to leaving Borussia Dortmund this summer. Graeme Bailey has reported for TeamTalk that Nmecha is open to leaving Dortmund. Furthermore, Bailey reports that intermediaries are exploring the market on behalf of Felix Nmecha. Bailey reports that Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have been approached regarding Nmecha’s situation. None of the clubs mentioned have dismissed a move for Nmecha, Bailey adds. So perhaps there is a small chance that Manchester City could move for Felix Nmecha this summer.
Final thoughts.
The World Cup always throws up players who perform well in the tournament and secure themselves a big move. German midfielder Felix Nmecha could be one such player. Watching his performance against Côte D’Ivoire, you couldn’t help but think that Nmecha’s strengths in and out of possession would be tailor-made for a role in the Manchester City midfield. It seems an unlikely move at this stage, but if Nmecha continues his strong form, the case for City to move to bring Nmecha back to the club may become overwhelming.
