Julian Alvarez has made his intentions increasingly clear. Following Argentina’s World Cup match against Austria, the striker publicly acknowledged that he believes “a transfer is the best solution” and admitted that he wants to fulfill his dream.
Behind those words lies a growing desire to leave Atletico Madrid after two seasons and join Barcelona. But the Rojiblancos have no intention of making things easy.
Atletico refuse to strengthen a direct rival
Within the club, there is little appetite for selling one of their biggest stars to a domestic rival.
Relations between Atletico and Barcelona have been strained for some time, something reflected by the ironic social media posts published by the Madrid club after reports emerged linking the Catalans with Alvarez.
The club are also studying the possibility of filing a complaint over Barcelona’s contacts with the player’s representatives, arguing that the Argentine remains under a protected contract.

Real Madrid have also shown interest, submitting an offer worth €150 million, but Atletico turned it down.
According to sources close to the club, the message to Alvarez is straightforward: if he wants to leave, he may eventually be allowed to do so, but not for Barcelona.
Premier League exit preferred
Atletico’s preferred solution would be to move the Argentine abroad. Although the club initially had no intention of selling Alvarez this summer for anything below his €500 million release clause, executives have explored alternatives involving Premier League clubs.
One possibility considered internally involved Arsenal. As reported, Atletico studied a deal that would have included approximately €60 million plus Viktor Gyökeres.
However, Alvarez rejected the idea. Arsenal themselves quickly cooled any interest after learning that the striker’s priority was Barcelona.
PSG remains an alternative

The French champions are monitoring the situation closely and could look to strengthen their attack, especially if Gonçalo Ramos departs. However, no formal offer has arrived from Paris so far.
From Atletico’s perspective, a move to France would be preferable to seeing one of their most valuable assets strengthen a direct rival in Spain.
Julin only wants Barcelona
Despite the alternatives being explored around him, Alvarez’s position remains unchanged.
The World Cup winner wants to stay in Spain, where he and his family feel settled. He values the similarities between Spanish and Argentine culture and believes Barcelona represents the ideal sporting project.
In the eyes of the Catalan club, the player has already done what they expected from him by publicly positioning himself. The next step belongs to Barcelona, who must now attempt to negotiate with an Atletico side determined to resist.
For the moment, the message from the Metropolitano is clear: Alvarez is not for sale to Barcelona. If he leaves, the preference is for him to continue his career outside La Liga.
