‘I did everything I could at Real Madrid’ – Kylian Mbappe opens up on difficult season

Although he is currently away from Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe continues to awe everyone with his amazing skills, especially the ease with which he scores goals. Currently playing in the World Cup 2026, with France, the forward is behind only Lionel Messi as the player with most goals, 4.

As was the case in the first game against Senegal, the Frenchman again scored a brace in his side’s second game against Iraq. With these goals, he is right behind the Argentine superstar to become the player with the highest number of goals in the tournament’s history.

As MARCA has reported, the Merengue star also spoke to the media after this game against Iraq, and while commenting mainly on the French national team, also spoke on his last season with Real Madrid.

When asked about his form coming in to the competition, the Frenchman pointed to his last season with the white club, in which he was once again the team’s top goalscorer:

“I did everything I could at Real Madrid, but everyone knows I had a serious injury. Then I recovered, gradually regained my fitness, and returned in the same physical and mental condition, trying to arrive in good shape. But this is just the beginning, and we know we still have many things to improve.”

Last season, he scored 42 goals in 44 total games, while also providing 7 assists. 25 of these goals came in La Liga, thus securing his second Pichichi award in his two seasons in Spain. However, his injury at the end of the season kept him from winning another Golden Boot, which was won by Harry Kane for the 2025-26 season.

For now, he would be focusing fully on the World Cup 2026, and hoping to win his second World Cup title. There is no doubt that he would play a crucial part if his team is to go far into the tournament.

After that, he would be returning to a significantly changed Real Madrid than the one he left for the World Cup. Jose Mourinho has taken over from Alvaro Arbeloa, and he would have several new teammates, including his current teammate with France, Ibrahima Konate, in the Merengue dressing room.
