Noel Gallagher has given his blessing for England to use ‘Wonderwall’ as their World Cup anthem and insists ‘it belongs to the people’.
The Oasis star and talkSPORT regular messaged World Cup GameDay presenter Jason Cundy live on air to give his verdict on the viral clip.
Kane singing ‘Wonderwall’ with fans was one of his “favourite ever moments” in an England shirtGettyHarry Kane and Jude Bellingham, who both scored in the 4-2 win over Croatia, were among the players who then joined a post-match sing-along of Wonderwall with the fans.
England captain Kane, who netted twice on Wednesday, later said it was one of his ‘favourite ever moments’ in a Three Lions shirt.
Feeling Supersonic
“That was one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt and especially at a major tournament,” Kane told the Lions’ Den podcast.
“I know it’s just the first game and we’re not getting carried away, but just that emotional connection with the fans… We know how much it means to them.
“We have that connection right now, but just that moment, singing Wonderwall in the stadium… Everyone knew the words, and that was a really special moment.”
The viral footage has since sparked calls for England to adopt Oasis’ 1995 hit Wonderwall as a permanent anthem for the World Cup.
It sparked a lively debate on talkSPORT’s World Cup GameDay, with host Jeff Stelling a fan of anything that replaces ‘Sweet Caroline’.
Oasis star and Manchester City fan Gallagher was clearly listening in, as he soon fired across his verdict to co-presenter Cundy.
“Noel Gallagher‘s messaged me,” the former Chelsea player revealed live on talkSPORT.

“He [Gallagher] said, ‘For your information, that song belongs to the people…’ – talking about Wonderwall, right?” Cundy continued.
“That moment at the end where Harry Kane was talking about a special moment for fans.
“He said, ‘I don’t see it as my song. I thought it was a brilliant moment.
“ANYTHING BUT SWEET CAROLINE,’ block caps!”
On that last point concerning Neil Diamond’s track, Stelling concurred, adding: “Absolutely. Well done, Noel. Absolutely with you.”
talkSPORT regular Gallagher hailed the brilliant moment between the players and fans in a text to CundyStelling later said on Wonderwall: “It is an anthem. Let’s hope we’re singing it for many games to come.”
Cundy replied: “Well, we will see on Tuesday evening when England play next against Ghana, if that comes out again.
“And that connection, it’s so important that the players have that connection with the fans.
“That moment we saw where they were gazing up at the fans, and they were singing back to them. It was a real moment.”
Rolling with it
Gallagher’s blessing may come as a surprise given his complicated relationship with the England national team.
The 59-year-old has often revelled in the Three Lions’ misery, citing his support for Ireland.
In 2022, he dedicated ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ to the England team during a performance at Glastonbury.
He famously turned down the opportunity to perform on England’s 1998 World Cup song – ‘(How Does It Feel to Be) On Top of the World’.

Explaining the decision many years ago, he said: “I’ve always supported Ireland since I was a kid.
“Oasis were asked to do the England song and go on at Wembley – my uncles would have killed me.”
Revisiting that decision on talkSPORT recently, Gallagher said: “I got asked to get involved in one, never been asked to write one.
“I think it was an England thing back in the ’90s, Ocean Colour Scene were involved, and Ian McCulloch, I’m not sure what the tune was, it got swamped by ‘Three Lions’ anyway.
“It’s not something I would write.”
