Ivory Coast star left in tears after ‘strange moment’ against Germany

Ivory Coast were hit with an awful injury blow in their 2-1 World Cup defeat to Germany in Group E.

With the game enthrallingly poised at 1-1, Wilfried Singo pulled up lame.

Galatasaray’s versatile defender had been holding up the ball on the touchline, shielding it from Arsenal forward Kai Havertz.

He began pushing up against his opponent before trying to move the ball forward.

In doing so, he sprang upwards slightly before nudging the ball out of play and clutching his left hamstring.

After some treatment, Guela Doue – France international Desire Doue’s brother – replaced him.

Singo continued to receive treatment on the bench, however, he looked inconsolable.

Darren Bent reacts to ‘strange moment’

Former Premier League striker Darren Bent, on commentary for talkSPORT said: “He’s been fantastic today, but [this injury] is a concern because he defended really well there up against Havertz.

“He pulled up, he was the one who put the ball out of play, holding his hamstring.

“You hope that he’s OK but, I mean, the body strength he shows there to hold him off.

“But as he goes away from Havertz, he just, he just pops the ball out of play out of play on his own and then holds his hamstring.”

Commentator and European football expert Kev Hatchard added: “It’s a strange moment, he just felt the back of his left leg.”

After a shot of Singo upset on the bench, he added: “Singo was covering his face there with his shirt.

“It was suggested perhaps he was crying. He certainly looked very upset, so we hope that’s not a tournament-ending injury for him.”

Germany prevail thanks to Undav’s late heroics

Ivory Coast had looked to be on the way to a historic win over Germany in Toronto.

They led through Franck Kessie’s first-half strike as the Europeans struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Gradually, though, the tide began to turn in the second period and super sub Deniz Undav put the game on its head.

He headed home a superb ball from fellow substitute Nadiem Amiri to level the scores from close range.

And in added time he expertly finished from a fine Felix Nmecha through ball.

The result puts Germany into the Round of 32 but whether they top Group E is still to be confirmed.
