Mo Salah dropped a statement and it's glorious news for Liverpool

Mo Salah dropped a statement on Sunday evening. It's simply fantastic news for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah captained Egypt to a first World Cup win on Sunday against New Zealand. It was a historic night and one that saw Salah achieve a long-held dream.

But this is also one that looks incredible for Liverpool. Salah played very well in the match, scoring one and assisting another - meaning he has one goal and two assists across Egypt's opening two fixtures.

This looked more like the Salah of old, heavily involved and making things happen. He created five chances across the match, for evidence of that.

Which is strange for a player so many believe is finished at the elite level. This was a statement performance - one that demonstrates there's a lot more to give.

Now, Salah won't be giving it at Liverpool. He leaves this summer for somewhere new, unfortunately, but what we do have is evidence that the poor form last season wasn't necessarily his fault.

It always looked like more of an issue with the team's structure. Perhaps if Salah was the only Liverpool player who struggled, you could claim he wasn't up to it but every single player disappointing? That's never a coincidence.

That's something backed up by other performances in the competition. Cody Gakpo has been fantastic: dangerous in the opener against Japan and then arguably the best player on the pitch against Sweden. He finished with two goals and an assist.

Alexander Isak scored a brilliant goal in Sweden's opener, while Ryan Gravenberch and Florian Wirtz have looked good, too. In fact, no club has seen its players supply more goals this tournament than Liverpool.

Salah's performance suggests that the change of coach at Liverpool was necessary. It's a move to try and unlock far more from this squad with new ideas and that it was more of a team disappointment last season than this being a poor squad.

It's something holding true across Liverpool players at the World Cup and has us excited for the Andoni Iraola era. Change had to happen - and Liverpool are the better for it.

Mohamed Salah: Situation Summary

Liverpool Career and Performance

As of 22 June 2026, Mohamed Salah is a 34-year-old forward who is currently a free agent following his historic departure from Liverpool FC. After breaking the club record for single-season goal involvements during a spectacular 2025/26 campaign, the legendary Egyptian attacker mutually agreed to terminate his contract early in March 2026 to pursue a new chapter. He officially brought the curtain down on his trophy-laden, nine-year Anfield career last month during a final match against Brentford, cementing his status as Liverpool's third-highest goalscorer of all time.

International Status and World Cup Involvement

Salah is currently in North America captaining the Egypt national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He made history on 21 June 2026 by delivering a masterful superior player-of-the-match performance in Group G. Salah recorded a clinical 67th-minute goal and an 82nd-minute assist for Trézéguet to inspire the Pharaohs to a 3–1 triumph over New Zealand. The result marked Egypt's first-ever World Cup victory since 1934 and made Salah the oldest African player to record a goal and an assist in a single tournament match since 1966.
