Real Madrid ace faces unexpected challenge after national teammate shines at World Cup

Aurelien Tchouameni remains one of Didier Deschamps’ most trusted midfielders, but France’s recent World Cup outing has added an interesting twist to the battle for places in midfield.

The Real Madrid midfielder was absent from France’s squad for the group-stage clash against Iraq after experiencing physical discomfort in the lead-up to the match.

While Tchouameni was already expected to be rested, his condition ultimately convinced the coaching staff not to take any risks.

Notably, France secured another important victory without him, against Irqq, guaranteeing qualification for the knockout rounds.

However, the performance of his replacement has created an additional talking point around Deschamps’ midfield selections moving forward.

Caution with Tchouameni

As a result, Deschamps adjusted his plans and turned to Roma midfielder Manu Kone, who partnered Adrien Rabiot in the centre of the park.

Tchouameni’s absence immediately attracted attention given his importance for both France and Real Madrid.

Notably, the decision was largely precautionary, with France already aware of the demanding workload many players carried into the tournament following a long club season.

So what’s the story?

As Tchouameni watched from the sidelines, Manu Kone delivered a performance that caught attention.

The Roma midfielder slotted into the double pivot alongside Rabiot and helped France maintain control throughout much of the encounter.

His display inevitably sparked discussion about France’s midfield depth and provided Deschamps with another strong option heading into the knockout rounds.

That creates an interesting situation for the French coach.

Before the tournament, Tchouameni’s place in the starting XI was rarely questioned.

Against Senegal, the Real Madrid midfielder and Rabiot formed an effective partnership, providing energy, balance and intensity out of possession.

However, Kone’s performance against Iraq produced similarly positive reviews, which means Deschamps now has another midfielder capable of operating at the same level as Tchouameni.

For what it is worth, these developments should not be viewed as a threat to Tchouameni’s long-term position with France.

If anything, they only show the depth available to Deschamps now that France have qualified for the Round of 32.
