Swansea City great and former Wales international Herbie Williams has died aged 85.

After joining as a 15-year-old in 1955, Swansea-born Williams played for his local club between 1958 and 1975.

His tally of 513 league appearances is the third highest of any player in the club's history.

In all he played 608 times for Swansea, scoring 129 goals.

The Championship side said they were "deeply saddened" by the death of "one of the club's most loyal servants".

"A gracious, humble man, with a deep love and affection for Swansea - city and club - Herbie will be greatly missed by all who knew him," the Swans added.

Primarily an inside forward, Williams was part of the Swansea side who, when in the old Second Division, enjoyed a memorable run to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1963-64.

They famously beat Liverpool at Anfield en route to the last four, where they were beaten by Preston North End at Villa Park.

Williams, who helped Swansea win promotion from the fourth tier in 1969-70, won three Wales caps while playing for the club.

He had a brief spell living in Australia at the end of his career before returning home to Swansea.
