Scotland captain Caroline Weir has signed a three-year contract with French champions Lyon after leaving Real Madrid.

The 30-year-old midfielder spent four years in Spain, scoring 63 goals in 125 appearances, and was voted Real player of the year in 2023 and 2025, as well as the Spanish league player of the year three years ago.

But her side finished runners-up again to Barcelona last season and she expressed her regret on leaving that she had not been able to help them win any silverware.

Now Weir joins a club who have won their domestic league five seasons in a row, including a league and cup double last term.

Lyon have also won the Champions League a record eight times, although not since 2022.

They were beaten 4-0 in this season's final by Barcelona, who had also convincingly ousted Weir's Real in the quarter-finals.

The Scot, who has 121 caps for her country, began her career with Hibernian before moving to Arsenal, Bristol Academy, Liverpool, Manchester City then Real.

Last year, she became the first Scottish player to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or award.
