The 38-year-old is now the joint-top goalscorer in World Cup history with Miroslav Klose.

And the South American giants will be looking to go deep into the tournament.

But Austria also started with a win, beating 3-1 Jordan.

Ralf Rangnick‘s side are often seen as the dark horses, and they were impressive, though, this will be a step up.

Argentina vs Austria: Team news

Argentina could make a change up front after Lautaro Martinez struggled in the opening game.

That would see Julian Alvarez come in for the Inter Milan captain to partner Messi.

There is also probably going to be a change at right-back with Gonzalo Montiel struggling with a hamstring problem.

Meanwhile, Austria are unlikely to risk Stefan Posch, who has a broken jaw.

Argentina vs Austria: What has been said?

Argentina manager Scaloni isn’t a fan of the hydration breaks.

Speaking ahead of the contest in Texas, he said: “There are no easy games, especially in the group stage.

“Historically, but now also with the 48-team format, the group stage has always been hard. Now with the conditions of the heat and the hydration break.

“The game is stopped constantly, perhaps it gives a hand to the weaker team because they have time to fix things. They have time to adjust.

“In the end, it’s done to have more time, but it fragments the game. It’s four quarters then in the halftime we have just three minutes to talk to players between them coming in and going back [on the field]. But it’s done.”
