Almirón shown straight red for breaking FIFA’s new anti-mouth-covering rule

If you're still up watching Turkiye against Paraguay, you've been treated to plenty of drama and now even some red card history.

After Matías Galarza scored the quickest goal of the tournament so far just 64 seconds in (and on the same day as Morocco scored 71 seconds in), more scenes have occurred.

Paraguay's arguably biggest star, Miguel Almiron, was shown a direct red card after committing an offence which breaks a new rule from FIFA.

The global governing body introduced what is popularly known as the “Prestianni Law” in attempts to punish hidden insults in soccer.

The new rule arrived after Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni used a homophobic slur toward Real Madrid's Vinícius Jr. during a Champions League match.

As such, any player who is now covering their mouth in a confrontation may receive a red card. Such a rule was applied during Friday's late match.

VAR reviewed the incident after Almiron appeared to say something to Meri Muldur, who ran over the officials.

Following review, Paraguay's No. 10 was sent off in what will be known as a historic first in football.
