MLS Commissioner Don Garber has suggested ‘there is a lot of work to be done’ to keep the Whitecaps in Vancouver.

Despite significant success on the field, ongoing ‘structural challenges’ mean it will be hard to keep the team in Canada.

The Whitecaps were put up for sale in 2024 and to date, have been unable to find a buyer willing to keep Major League Soccer in British Columbia.

BC Place, the team’s home field since 2011, is government-owned and operated by B.C. Pavilion Corporation, which restricts potential revenue streams.

It’s currently in use at the 2026 World Cup.

On top of stadium issues, a lack of government and corporate support has led to speculation that the Whitecaps could soon be on the move.

Earlier this year, the team released a statement to address a potential 1,250-mile relocation to Las Vegas, and urged any local buyers to come forward.

Fans in Vancouver are desperate to keep their team, but speaking at the World Cup on Friday, Commissioner Garber discussed the uncertainty around the Western Conference powerhouse.

“Listen, there’s a lot of work to be done,” he told talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs, ahead of the USMNT’s 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle.

“There’s a desire and will on the behalf of everybody to do everything we can to keep the team.

“But we’ve got a lot of work to do to be able to put all the pieces together.”

Garber added that if the Whitecaps are to stay in Vancouver, they require a new stadium deal.

“We’re committed to keeping the team here if we have a viable stadium project, which we don’t have now,” he said, according to the Associated Press.

As the MLS breaks for the World Cup, the Whitecaps are sitting pretty at the top of the Western Conference standings.

They contested their first MLS Cup Final in 2025, where they lost to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, and boast four consecutive Canadian championships.

Whitecaps leaving Vancouver would be ‘travesty’

But despite impressing on the field, and drawing strong support with a league-leading attendance during last year’s playoffs, the Whitecaps need to find a new stadium deal to stay in Vancouver.

A group came forward in April to propose relocating the franchise to Sin City, and while Garber has pushed to keep them where they are, the bid remains under consideration.

David Eby, premier of British Columbia, said this week that losing the team would be a ‘travesty’.

“We’re pulling out the stops to keep the Whitecaps here in British Columbia,” Eby revealed Thursday.

“To have them go to Las Vegas would be a travesty, and I do believe that there’s a path for us to try to keep the Whitecaps here, and so that’s what we’re working on.”

While the World Cup has taken center stage across the US and Canada, there is plenty to be resolved for one of the MLS’ biggest teams.

Will they stick with Vancouver, or twist with Vegas?
