Barcelona ace’s underappreciated performance in World Cup opener backed by eye-opening stats

Barcelona midfielder Gavi found himself at the centre of criticism following Spain’s disappointing World Cup opener against Cape Verde, but a closer look at the numbers paints a very different picture of his performance.

The 21-year-old’s inclusion in Luis de la Fuente’s starting lineup surprised many before kick-off, and when Spain struggled to break down their opponents in a frustrating goalless draw, much of the attention shifted towards the Barcelona star.

However, while traditional statistics suggested Gavi had little influence on the match, FIFA’s advanced data reveals that he was actually one of Spain’s most important players away from the ball.

What’s the story?

Spain’s playing style under De la Fuente relies heavily on aggressive pressing and quick ball recoveries, and few players embody that philosophy better than Gavi.

According to FIFA’s match data, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona midfielder led Spain in several crucial defensive metrics against Cape Verde.

He registered eight direct presses, the highest total among Spanish players, while also producing 19 indirect presses throughout the game.

Gavi also completed 31 forward pressing runs and was involved in 15 collective pressing situations, which shows the intensity and energy he brought to Spain’s defensive structure.

While those actions rarely generate headlines, they are fundamental to the way Spain want to play.

They disrupt opposition build-up, force mistakes and help the team recover possession higher up the pitch.

It is the type of dirty work that often goes unnoticed during matches but is highly valued by coaches.

Gavi’s influence was crucial

Perhaps the most revealing figure from the match concerns Spain’s ability to win the ball back after losing possession.

Despite struggling to create chances in attack, Spain recovered possession on average in just 9.61 seconds after surrendering the ball.

In comparison, Cape Verde needed 24.76 seconds to regain possession when Spain had control.

That particular difference explains the effectiveness of Spain’s pressing system and, by extension, the importance of players like Gavi within it.

The Barcelona midfielder was one of the key drivers behind that relentless pressure, helping Spain maintain territorial dominance even during periods when their attacking play lacked fluency.

Without that intensity, the match could have become considerably more difficult for the Spanish national team.
