Andy Robertson avoided falling foul of FIFA’s new throw-in rule with a unique approach during Scotland’s win over Haiti.

Following a 28-year absence from the tournament, John McGinn’s goal secured Scotland‘s first World Cup win since 1990.

What is the new throw-in rule?

The match also saw both sides contend with a string of new rules introduced for this summer’s finals.

Amongst them is an approach from officials to combat time-wasting at goal-kicks and throw-ins.

Players now have five seconds to take throw-ins once the referee starts a countdown.

The referee chooses when to start the time limit if a player is taking too long at a throw-in.

This has so far been when the player picks up the ball before restarting play.

To signal the countdown has begun, officials will raise their arm in the air.

If penalised, the opposition will be awarded the throw-in instead.

Similarly, a corner will be awarded for the same rule breach at goal-kicks.

Robertson appeared to have come up with a way around the new rule change during the win over Haiti.

The Scotland captain could be seen signalling his teammates into position before picking the ball up.

As a result, the referee had not yet started the countdown for him to take the throw-in.

On Robertson’s thinking, one fan said: “Scotland’s Andy Robertson has found a hack to beat FIFA’s new throw-in countdown: Get your teammates in position before you pick the ball up, which starts the referee’s countdown. Very smart.”

Another fan said: “Very clever, I dare say we will be seeing more of this. People will start to push back on the new rules in little ways.”

However, his teammate Aaron Hickey was penalised during the match.

The Brentford full-back took too long to take a throw-in, with the referee awarding the throw to Haiti as a result.

Robertson played the full 90 minutes as he won his 95th cap for Scotland on his World Cup debut.

The 32-year-old, who will join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer this summer, previously featured at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

Scotland continue their group stage campaign against Morocco on Friday, with kick-off at 11pm, live on talkSPORT.

The Group C leaders then face Brazil in their final match of the opening round on June 24.
