‘He really made an impact’ – France manager Didier Deschamps praises Bradley Barcola’s cameo off the bench against Senegal

France kicked off their 2026 World Cup the right way with a 3-1 win against Senegal in East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium on Tuesday. After an underwhelming first half, Les Bleus finally went through the gears in the second half. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring near the hour mark. One minute after coming off the bench to replace Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola doubled France’s lead. Senegal’s Ibrahim Mbaye and Mbappé both struck in injury time.

Speaking to M6, France national team manager Didier Deschamps highlighted Les Bleus’ nervousness and tension, until they gradually grew into the game with Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé switching their post. “Once we were able to get into our rhythm a bit more and adjust Ousmane and Michael’s positioning, that made a big difference.

Deschamps also praised Barcola’s “impact” off the bench. Beyond his goal, Barcola injected dynamism and pace to a side that sorely needed it, which puts into focus the input that Deschamps will come to expect from France’s riches on the bench. “The important thing is what ‘Barco’ did today and what others will have to do when they’re on the bench or when they come in—it’s about contributing something, and we’re going to need all of that.”

Deschamps, who will leave his post after France’s run in this 2026 World Cup, also took time to acknowledge the support from the stands. 5,000 French fans reportedly attended the game against Senegal. “To have this many French fans there too… I know they’ve come a long way, and it’s expensive for them. Football is magic. When you win and can share those emotions. Even though today was just the first game, we’re going to savor it anyway.
