Music legend Sir Rod Stewart has told talkSPORT why he almost collapsed at a recent show in the USA.
Video footage from Stewart’s show in West Valley City, Utah last Friday showed the veteran rocker struggling on stage and having to be given oxygen.
Stewart has been on tour in the USGetty“The show must go on,” Stewart reassured fans, before opting to take a seat for his next song.
“I nearly f****** fainted there. Would you mind if I sit down for this one”
The 81-year-old had previously cancelled a string of other shows due to health reasons, and he revealed to talkSPORT’s Jim White and Simon Jordan that he’d not been feeling 100 per cent.
“I really shouldn’t have gone to the Haiti game,” said Stewart, who was in attendance in Boston to see Scotland record their first World Cup win since 1990.
“I had to cancel a show the night before because I just had no voice left. But the truth is, Jim, I wasn’t going to let my two sons down.
“I promised them since they were born that we’re going to go to a World Cup, and this is the first one that’s come about.
“And it wasn’t a good look, I admit, but I’m going to just have to take the stick. So, I did it [went to the Haiti game] for the boys.”
Long-time Celtic fan Stewart was also asked for his thoughts ahead of Scotland’s crunch Group C clash against Brazil in Miami.
Having beaten Haiti and lost to Morocco, the Scots might well need to take a point if they’re to reach the knockout stage of a major tournament for the very first time.
And Stewart is well aware of the size of the challenge they face in the form of the five-time world champions.
Stewart was born in London but has deep ties to Scotland through his fatherGetty“It’s going to be so difficult tonight, Jim,” he said. “Do we go with two up front – go for it – or defend or what? I don’t know.”
“Well, Sir Rod, I think you do know,” Jordan responded, to which Stewart continued: “Yeah, you’re right. The odds are against us – we all know that.
“But I’ll tell you one thing, my friend: we have the greatest supporters in the world. There’s no doubt about it; they’ve made Scotland proud.
“I love the fact they drunk Boston dry and the England supporters got there and there was no beer.”
And fans got up to similar antics in Miami too as one supporter swore live on TV, prompting the broadcaster to apologise.
Scotland get things underway in their third and final group game against Brazil at 11pm BST on Tuesday.
Brazil also have plenty to play for: Carlo Ancelotti’s side are still targeting top spot in the group after drawing with Morocco and beating Haiti.
