Tottenham made an enquiry to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, talkSPORT understands.

The Portugal international looks destined for a London Stadium departure following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.

Manchester United are favourites to sign Fernandes with the 13-time Premier League winners currently in advanced talks with the player’s agent Jorge Mendes.

Fernandes is understood to be keen on a move to Old Trafford with personal terms not expected to be an issue.

And his acquisition is likely to set the Red Devils back £80million, which is what West Ham value their player.

But Fernandes had admirers across the Premier League with Spurs showing an interest in the player but this has since cooled.

Spurs mean business

Fernandes may be a bridge too far for Spurs but they’ve been very active in the transfer window already having made three new signings.

All three have been in defence with centre-backs Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke arriving from Bournemouth and Brighton respectively.

Meanwhile, they also secured the signing of left-back and Scotland captain Andy Robertson, who joins on a free upon the expiration of his Liverpool contract.

talkSPORT understands Tottenham are plotting an audacious move for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.

It’s a move that’s being driven by Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi, who views Tonali as a leading target.

The Italian won’t come cheap though with Newcastle said to value Tonali at at least £90m.

West Ham woes

Links to Tonali and Fernandes point to exciting times for Tottenham, but things couldn’t be more opposite for the team they pipped to Premier League survival in West Ham.

The Hammers face a summer fire sale where they’re said to need to raise £100m to help them cope with the financial consequences of relegation.

As well as Fernandes, Man United are understood to be interested in signing winger Crysencio Summerville.

Dutch international Summerville is said to be valued at £50m by West Ham.

There’s also uncertainty over the futures of captain Jarrod Bowen and defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the east London outfit prepare for life in the Championship for the first time in 14 years.
