Mexico are hosts in their ninth straight World Cup appearance this summer in a proud moment for the famous footballing nation.
The North American side are hoping to be pushing for glory in their home tournament, alongside the USA and Canada.
Mexico’s players have a unique approach when singing their anthemDoug Pensinger/Getty ImagesAt the last World Cup in 2022, they were unfortunately knocked out in the group stage, winning just one of their three games.
But there will be higher hopes this time around as they play in front of their own fans, with passion expected to be off the charts.
And as they take part, other supporters around the world are likely to notice something during the national anthems.
The whole Mexico team will stand together to make a defiant gesture that might look odd to anyone else.
Why do Mexico players put their hands across their chest during the national anthem?
This gesture is known as the saludo a la bandera, which means ‘salute to the flag’ in English.
Mexicans use this as a chance to pay respect to their country.
However, it is also included in Mexican law – specifically for sporting events.
Article 14 within Mexican law states: “The civil salute to the Mexican Flag will be done in a straight position, putting the right hand extended over the breast, with the palm facing down to where the heart is located.
“The male people will salute the flag with the head uncovered.”
So there’s a very good reason behind the salute and it will certainly make for compelling viewing at the World Cup this summer as fans and players alike pay respect to their nation.
