Portugal take on Uzbekistan this week as they look to bounce back from a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign.

The 2016 European champions are one of the hot favourites to win the tournament, but they opened with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo.

After Joao Neves scored inside the opening ten minutes, it looked as if it would be a great afternoon for Roberto Martinez‘s side.

But they let Congo back into the game, and Yoane Wissa scored an equaliser before half time.

In the second half, Martinez chucked as many attacking players on as possible, but they created very little, with Cristiano Ronaldo particularly poor up front.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan were beaten 3-1 by Colombia in their opening game.

It wasn’t a great start to their World Cup journey for Uzbekistan

Portugal vs Uzbekistan: Team news

After such a poor performance, Martinez could elect to make a few changes.

Rafael Leao has a chance of replacing Pedro Neto on the left and Francisco Conceicao could come in on the right.

Ruben Dias wasn’t fit enough to start the opener and will face a fitness test.

Despite a very bad display leading the line, it is unlikely that Ronaldo is dropped.

Ronaldo barely touched the ball and missed one huge chance for Portugal

Portugal vs Uzbekistan: What has been said?

Conceicao has denied that Portugal have to pass the ball to Ronaldo.

Speaking ahead of facing Uzbekistan, he said: “We don’t have any obligation or need to pass the ball to him.

“Cristiano is an example because of the hunger he shows every day, as if it were his last session.

“No, I think Cristiano, with his quality for scoring goals, I don’t think there’s anyone like him in that department.

“And we don’t have that obligation, that necessity to pass the ball to him.

“For example, speaking for myself, I pass the ball to whoever I think is better unmarked at that moment.

“It’s not like I have time to think about who’s … what’s the face of the teammate next to me, no. I think we do everything by instinct, we do everything … it’s thousandths of a second, there’s no time for that.

“And of course, Cristiano is here to help, just like any other player in the national team.”

Martinez is under pressure to make a decision on RonaldoGetty

talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings believes that Ronaldo’s stock is very low these days.

He said: “I think Portugal can win this World Cup but it won’t be because of the brilliance of Ronaldo. He will hinder them.

“I think Ronaldo up front is a major hindrance. He is a spent force. He was a spent force in Qatar (2022 World Cup).

“When did he last score in a World Cup? When did he score in a competitive tournament for Portugal? You’re looking at ten games ago, something like that?

“Lionel Messi has scored nine World Cup goals since Ronaldo last scored at the World Cup.

“He’s not a natural finisher like he was. He was once arguably the best finisher to ever live. You could make a case.

“He’s not better than Ollie Watkins.

“If Cristiano Ronaldo was English, I’d have Danny Welbeck ahead of him. He doesn’t get in the England team.

“Dominic Calvert -Lewin is a better footballer today than Ronaldo.

“I don’t think Ronaldo should be in any team.”
