When Spain and Barcelona play these days, understandably, all eyes are fixed on one player: Lamine Yamal, waiting to see what magic the teenager comes up with.
However, one other teenager, not much older than Lamine, also deserves his flowers: Pau Cubarsi, because what he is doing is perhaps even more incredible.
It is criminal to be 19 years old and play with the kind of maturity that the La Masia graduate does in central defence, a position where players tend to improve as they age.
The Barça centre-back has played the full 90 minutes in Spain’s first two games against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.
Spain are yet to concede in the tournament, and while the attacking level of both opponents was limited, Cubarsi’s calm has been impossible to ignore.

Against Saudi Arabia, he was almost flawless in possession. Cubarsi completed 98 of his 99 passes, while Saudi Arabia were restricted to just three shots and only two touches inside Spain’s penalty area.
A defender who makes football look simple
The most impressive thing about Cubarsi is not only the passing accuracy. It is the ease with which he plays.
He receives under pressure, chooses the right pass, steps forward when needed and rarely looks rushed.
Luis de la Fuente also praised the centre-backs after Spain’s win, highlighting the reliability of the Cubarsi-Laporte partnership.
Cubarsi had 107 touches against Saudi Arabia, completed 98 passes and found teammates with all four of his long balls.
Barça’s defensive future is already here
From a Barcelona perspective, this World Cup is another confirmation that Cubarsi is not just a promise. He is already a player who can handle elite responsibility.

His development at Barça has been stunning. Hansi Flick’s system can be suicidal for central defenders, and yet the teenager always looks unfazed.
The harder tests will come now. Uruguay will bring more physicality, more movement and more established attackers. Later rounds, if Spain progress, will ask even more from him.
However, the start matters. Cubarsi has built confidence without fuss. He does not need headlines to show his importance.
Lamine is the face of Barça’s attacking future, but Cubarsi may be just as vital on the other side of the pitch. One creates chaos, the other safeguards his team from it.
Together, having both of them at similar ages and with incredible ceilings is a gift for Barcelona.
