Exiled in Mexico for nearly a year, Anthony Martial (30) has had a difficult spell abroad. Not to say chaotic. Having made 20 appearances for CF Monterrey, the former Manchester United striker proved decisive on just four occasions, scoring one goal and providing three assists.
These performances have come in for criticism, leading him and his club to terminate his contract, which was originally due to run until 2027. Now a free agent and keen to make a personal comeback, Martial is reportedly keen, according to Foot Mercato, to return to France, where his representatives are said to have put his name forward to several Ligue 1 clubs.
But there is a ‘but’ – and not a minor one at that. Only OGC Nice are said not to have yet ruled out the possibility of signing the 30-time French international (two goals). But to stand any chance of signing him, the Aiglons’ management will first have to trim the squad and reduce their wage bill, even as Martial’s demands are reportedly substantial.
So nothing is set in stone for the 2015 Golden Boy, whom no one would have predicted such a future for a decade ago.
