James Corden has revealed his phone ‘exploded’ after Kylian Mbappe performed his flute celebration against Senegal.

France’s talisman got his World Cup off to a flier by netting twice in his country’s 3-1 win over Senegal in their Group I opener.

Mbappe marked a new World Cup campaign with a new celebration – and Corden was visibly chuffed as he told talkSPORT Breakfast about his role in it

Mbappe opened the scoring in the clash, as he slotted the ball past Edouard Mendy before debuting a new celebration.

Instead of hitting his trademark arms-folded pose, the 27-year-old pretended to hold up an imaginary flute and started playing.

Promise delivered

While some were left scratching their heads at the reason behind Mbappe’s celebration, many others knew exactly where it came from.

In a video released ahead of the World Cup, the Frenchman had joined James Corden on his After Hours show, where he revealed a secret musical talent in a car ride with the Gavin and Stacey star.

Mbappe said: “I tried to play as a kid. My parents wanted me to do many things and explore many things, to open my mind to do all the things. Because we never know what’s going to happen.”

Corden then pulled out a flute and challenged Mbappe to showcase his skills.

“Score your first goal. Bang, top corner. You run, here [normal celebration], straight to here [miming playing the flute].”

Mbappe agreed to the challenge and duly kept his promise when he found the net against Senegal – which saw him equal France’s all-time goalscoring record before breaking it later – to the delight of Corden.

‘It was nuts’

Almost a week on from Mbappe showcasing his celebration to the world, Corden joined talkSPORT Breakfast, where he recalled the surreal experience of watching his request come to life.

The comedian smiled as he told presenter Andy Goldstein: “It was nuts man, because I was watching the game with my dad.

He continued: “I was in the kitchen and my dad just went: ‘He did the flute! He did the flute!’, and I ran in.

“And then my phone just exploded in a way that it hasn’t exploded since the Gavin and Stacey finale – in terms of people getting in touch with me.

“It was nuts man and I can’t believe he did it.”

And Corden revealed that Mbappe had been so intent on delivering on his promise that he even sent him a personal video afterwards.

He continued: “I got sent a video after the game off a mutual friend, and he [Mbappe] just lent into the camera and he went: ‘I told you. I told you I do it!’, and then walked away.

“It was nuts that he did that, it was nuts that he remembered, because we shot that before I came in to see you last time on the show, so that’s a while ago.

“And he says in the video in the clip: ‘First goal against Senegal, I’ll do it’.

“And I just never ever thought that he would. I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it. And what a guy – I mean, amazing.”

Man on fire

Corden may well wish he had planned out even more celebrations for Mbappe this summer, who has kept up his remarkable World Cup goalscoring form so far.

After kicking things off with a double against Senegal, the French star grabbed another two goals in his second game on Monday night.

France cruised to a 3-0 win over Iraq, with Mbappe opening the scoring in the first-half with a piledriver from range.

But he had to wait some time before completing his double, as the second half of the game was then delayed by more than two hours due to a thunderstorm.

Even this couldn’t stop Mbappe though, who scored his and France’s second shortly after the restart after a mix-up at the back from Iraq.

This was his 16th World Cup goal overall, which moved him level with Miroslav Klose in the competition’s all-time rankings.

Lionel Messi is the only player Mbappe is behind for World Cup goals with the Argentine superstar scoring his 17th and 18th goals during their 2-0 win over Austria earlier on Monday.

And after both players went head-to-head in a thrilling final in 2022, where Mbappe scored a hat-trick, you wouldn’t bet against more of the same this summer, as France look to regain their crown from Argentina following their last glory in 2018.
