Detroit may have decided against entering the race to host the World Cup, but soccer is coming to Motor City regardless.
Detroit City FC is building its first-ever soccer-specific stadium as part of a major development of the Corktown neighborhood.
Detroit is getting its first soccer stadiumXAround $200 million is being spent on the 15,000-seat arena, with $990 million raised to regenerate an area first settled by Irish immigrants in the 1830s and 1840s.
Michigan Central Station has opened after a six-year overhaul costing $950 million and will be followed by housing and further infrastructure development in a bid to bring new life to the area.
AlumniFi Field will be one of the focal points, but its arrival has been pushed back a year to 2028 — just in time for the USL Championship season.
The franchise says the delay will allow for a better result and improved matchday experience for fans, as well as ensuring the stadium has a positive long-term impact for the community.
Detroit City FC will remain at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck – its base since 2016 — for the 2027 season.
An official groundbreaking ceremony is set for July at the site of the former Southwest Detroit Hospital.
The seven-acre property was bought for 2024 at a cost of $6.5 million and demolition began in 2025.
World Cup fever is gripping the country thanks to the hordes of visiting fans and two resounding USMNT victories.

Ferndale-based firm Disbrow Iannuzzi Architects is behind the design, which includes premium seating areas, VIP suites, a tunnel club and team facilities.

Detroit World Cup watch parties draw huge crowds
Detroit failed to bid on the 2026 World Cup amid concerns over replacing the turf at Ford Field and worries about the cost.
That doesn’t mean the city turned its back on the event, with watch parties pulling crowds of up to 4,000.
Some 2,000 people gathered at Dearborn Peace Park West on June 16 as Norway beat Iraq 4-1.
Many are supporting the USMNT as well as teams from their family backgrounds with Arab Americans making up 53 percent of Dearborn’s population,
“We wanted to bring people together in a friendly, safe, family atmosphere,” Hussein Hachem, who organized the Dearborn events, said via Yahoo Sports. “It’s crazy.

“When you’re watching a football game, for those 90 minutes, everybody is just focused on the game, and the politics kind of disappear,” he added via the Detroit Free Press. “I think that’s what’s beautiful about it.”
Detroit City FC hosted a Team USA watch party at Campus Martius, with over 3,500 fans watching the 4-1 triumph over Paraguay.
There are hopes that the benefits of the tournament will continue long into the future and AlumniFi Field will be at the heart of that effort in Michigan.
