Liverpool and Real Madrid have been handed a major blow in their pursuit of Nico Schlotterbeck.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted the defender is feared to have suffered a serious ligament injury that could end his World Cup campaign.
The Borussia Dortmund centre-back was forced off during Germany’s latest World Cup outing against the Ivory Coast.
Initial assessments paint a worrying picture for one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders.
Speaking after the match, Nagelsmann revealed (via Fabrizio Romano), “Nico is suspected to have sustained a ligament injury. It’s not looking good.”
While the full extent of the damage is still to be confirmed through further scans, the early prognosis has raised fears that Schlotterbeck could miss the remainder of the tournament.
He could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, and the timing could hardly be worse for the 26-year-old.
He has attracted strong interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.
Liverpool have identified Schlotterbeck as one of the leading candidates to strengthen the heart of their defence as they plan for life beyond Virgil van Dijk.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also monitored the Germany international as they look to add another centre-back to Jose Mourinho’s rearguard.
Both clubs admire Schlotterbeck’s combination of composure on the ball, aggressive defending and ability to operate in a high defensive line.
His performances for Dortmund and Germany had only bolstered his reputation over the past 12 months.
However, a serious ligament injury would inevitably complicate any potential transfer.
Liverpool and Madrid are unlikely to walk away from their long-term interest altogether.
Still, both clubs will now await the results of medical examinations before deciding whether to press ahead with any move.
Extended rehabilitation could delay negotiations, while concerns over fitness and recovery may also affect Schlotterbeck’s valuation.
For now, Germany’s immediate concern is the possible loss of one of their defensive leaders as they look for a record-tying fifth World Cup title.
