Jurgen Klopp Apology Draws Attention During World Cup
When Germany opened their World Cup campaign with a convincing 7-1 victory over Curacao, Jurgen Klopp found himself at the centre of attention for reasons unrelated to the football itself. During live television coverage, Klopp joked about Germany’s team selection and appeared to reference Julian Nagelsmann’s position.
“Luckily, it’s Julian Nagelsmann who’s picking the team,” Klopp said while discussing the starting XI before adding: “Still.”
The comment was met with laughter from Thomas Muller, who replied: “Kloppo, we are still in June. You are already in September.”
While many interpreted the exchange as harmless banter, others viewed it differently. Former Germany international Stefan Effenberg was particularly critical.
“That’s not right; he’s speaking to millions of viewers.
“And on top of that, he ended up bursting out laughing. A comment like that, you can make it over a beer in the pub, but certainly not in front of millions of viewers. It’s unacceptable.”
Nagelsmann Keeps Focus on Germany
What followed was arguably more interesting than the original comment itself. Rather than escalating the situation, Nagelsmann chose to downplay the issue entirely.
“I did not expect an apology from Jurgen Klopp for his comments and I also don’t listen to everybody talking about our team. That’s not possible.”
For a coach leading Germany through a World Cup campaign, it was a practical response. Nagelsmann appears determined to keep the focus on performances rather than speculation, despite Klopp’s enduring popularity and reputation within German football.
Honest Response From Klopp
Klopp, now serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer, quickly addressed the controversy himself. His explanation carried the familiar self-deprecating humour that has often defined his public persona.
“We’re also informally part of the team, we’re absolutely on your side. I’ve already discovered the most hated word of the year: still.
“I could have punched myself in the face for that, but it was already too late and I was on TV. It just slipped out casually, and has absolutely no relevance. What I’ve realised is, I’ll be 59 on Tuesday and I’m still an idiot.”
He also added: “We are completely on your side, whatever you do with this. Nothing will come of it that is intended to disrupt the process here.”
The remarks effectively closed the matter, reinforcing that there was no serious intent behind the original joke.
Leipzig Decisions Add Context
The timing of the episode is noteworthy given Klopp’s growing influence within the Red Bull football structure. Speaking about RB Leipzig’s recent managerial change, Klopp explained:
“We are acting in an advisory capacity as the Global Team.
“But we were involved in the decision-making process and analysed the season. Ole (Werner) did a fantastic job. We qualified for the Champions League. But we also have to look forward at the same time. And when we thought about what that might look like, they decided on a change.”
With Klopp increasingly visible in executive football matters and Nagelsmann leading Germany into the latter stages of the World Cup, speculation is inevitable. Yet this episode ultimately highlighted something else, both men appear far more interested in football than in feeding headlines.
