Colombia look to progress to knockout stage as DR Congo aim to build on Portugal point

DR Congo picked up a more than useful and deserved point against Portugal in their opening game, with Newcastle United's Yoan Wissa scoring deep into first-half stoppage time to cancel out Joao Neves' early opener.

Colombia meanwhile took the full three points against Uzbekistan last time out, with Daniel Munoz, Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz all getting on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win.

Colombia could now make sure of their place in the next round of the competition with a victory in this game following Portugal's five-goal victory over Uzbekistan earlier in the day.

Nestor Lorenzo's side are the favourites to do exactly that after dominating the action against the Uzbeks.

It doesn't hurt them at all that Bayern Munich forward Diaz has come into the tournament hot on the heels of an excellent season in which he claimed 26 goals and 19 assists.

But DR Congo showed against Cristiano Ronaldo and co that they are determined to make their presence felt in their first World Cup since competing as Zaire in 1974.

Wissa put his frustrating campaign behind him by scoring his country's first-ever goal on this stage, while goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi (not to be misread in haste) will have been pleased not to have had a singly save to make after Portugal's fifth-minute opener.

We're not expecting this one to be an easy game for Colombia by any means, then.

But they should have enough quality across the park to get the job done in the end - even if they get a scare or two along the way.

  • Score prediction: Colombia 2-1 DR Congo
