Stats: Barcelona midfielder underwhelms for Spain in World Cup opener

Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start after a goalless draw against Cape Verde, but the result was not solely down to their inability to finish chances.

While Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha stole the spotlight with a string of outstanding saves, attention has also turned towards Barcelona midfielder Gavi, whose inclusion in the starting lineup surprised many and sparked even more debate after the final whistle.

As expected, Spain dominated possession and created opportunities throughout the contest, yet they lacked the cutting edge needed to break down a disciplined Cape Verde side.

As a result, scrutiny has quickly fallen on several individual displays, with Gavi receiving the harshest criticism.

Gavi struggled to influence Spain’s attack

Simply put, Gavi endured a difficult evening and failed to leave any meaningful mark on Spain’s attacking play.

The Barcelona midfielder struggled to connect play in dangerous areas and was unable to provide the creativity needed to unlock Cape Verde’s defence.

Statistically, Gavi finished the match with 10 turnovers while failing to register a shot on target, a key pass, a successful dribble or a successful cross.

For a player tasked with helping Spain control the game in advanced areas, those numbers understandably fall well below expectations.

Spain often looked short of ideas in the final third despite controlling large portions of possession. The midfield lacked fluidity, and the attacking unit struggled to receive quality service in dangerous positions.

As the game progressed, frustration became increasingly visible, both on the pitch and among supporters expecting a stronger opening display from one of the tournament favourites.

Luis de la Fuente’s explanation

With Spain still searching for a breakthrough, Luis de la Fuente opted to make a significant attacking adjustment in the 71st minute.

Gavi was withdrawn and replaced by his Barcelona teammate, Lamine Yamal, in an attempt to inject more creativity and unpredictability into the attack.

However, the substitution failed to alter the flow of the game. Cape Verde remained organised at the back, while Vozinha continued his inspired performance between the posts.

Speaking after the match, the Spanish coach backed his selection by stating,

“Gavi gave us a lot of depth on the wing in our last match against Peru. He brought energy and, above all, created space for Cucurella to get forward from deep,” he explained as per Mundo Deportivo.

It must be noted that Gavi’s selection had already generated discussion before the tournament due to his injury struggles and inconsistent club form.

Now, those concerns have only intensified following Spain’s opening fixture.
