Barcelona midfield star Frenkie de Jong had a memorable display against Sweden last night, putting on a masterclass in midfield.
He was a doubt coming into the game due to a collision with Quinten Timber in training. However, he still managed to start.
After the game, the Barça star offered a mixed but encouraging update after returning to action, admitting that he is still dealing with pain but feeling more confident about his condition.
“I still have pain, without a doubt, but today it was bearable. We will see how my body reacts, although I am confident about it,” he told NOS.
On whether he was worried after Ronald Koeman had raised doubts about his involvement following the collision, he added:
“Yes, of course. There was a collision during training that I was involved in. I sustained some damage because of that, but in the end everything was fine.”

The important thing is that De Jong was able to play and contribute, but Barça fans will also be wary about his fitness and physical condition.
Netherlands show a stronger version
De Jong was also positive about the team’s performance after a convincing 5-1 win, making it clear that the group should use the result as a platform.
“We have to build on today’s performance. We were much better. I think we showed weapons that can make us very dangerous,” he noted.
“There are things we can do better, but winning 5-1 makes us happy.”
That is exactly the tone the Dutch need from one of their senior midfielders. Not overexcited, not careless, but aware that the performance showed a step in the right direction.
The Netherlands, as a team, looked much better than they did against Japan.
Koeman needs Frenkie fit

De Jong’s fitness is a major issue because of what he brings to the team. When he is sharp, he gives the Dutch control, ball progression and calm under pressure.
His ability to carry the ball through midfield changes the rhythm of matches. It allows the team to escape pressure without forcing long passes, and it gives the attacking players better service in advanced areas.
If the Netherlands continue to play like they did against Sweden last night, they will be one of the teams to beat as the campaign goes on.
Frenkie has started the tournament in excellent form and, from a Barça point of view, they will hope that he can continue to impress for Koeman’s team in the coming weeks.
