Alphonso Davies is expected to make his return from injury in Canada’s crucial World Cup clash with Switzerland.

The 25-year-old has not played since suffering a hamstring issue in the second leg of Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6.

It has forced Canada captain Davies to watch the co-hosts’ opening two games at World Cup 2026 from the sidelines.

Jesse Marsch’s side have performed well in their skipper’s absence, claiming their first World Cup point in a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto before ticking off a maiden win at the tournament with a 6-0 thrashing of Qatar in Vancouver.

It leaves Canada top of Group B heading into their crucial clash with Switzerland in Vancouver at 8pm BST tonight and they will win the group if they avoid defeat.

Marsch’s side must win Group B to ensure they play their last-32 and - if they progress - last-16 fixtures in Vancouver, with any other outcome forcing them to contest their knockout games in the USA.

Davies’ big-game experience could be crucial against Switzerland and manager Marsch expects his captain to feature, although potentially only from the bench.

"We will evaluate what we need of him in the game," the former Leeds United boss told CBC. "I would like to get him into the match, for sure.

“And I think that he can have a big impact, both on us physically and football wise, but also mentally, psychologically, to have our captain back, our best player back in the team. I think this is a big factor."

Marsch added: "It's so much more than just what he brings on the pitch — it's what he represents to us. So, the good news is he's looking great, he's in training, he looks great, he looks fit, he looks ready to go, excited. So, let's see how things go, but I expect him to play."

Davies, who can operate in several positions, has won 58 caps for Canada but has not featured for his country since October 2024 due to a string of injuries.

The Bayern star played just 23 times for his club last season and did not make his first appearance of the campaign until December 9.

He started all three of Canada’s games at World Cup 2022 in Qatar, scoring in a 4-1 defeat by Croatia, and will now hope to help his country reach the knockout phase for the first time.
