The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi (23) had been arrested in relation to an investigation into match fixing.
His arrest in France came two weeks ago. The striker, who spent the second half of last season on loan at OGC Nice, is being investigated for match-fixing, accused of deliberately picking up a yellow card during the match between Les Aiglons and FC Metz on 17th May. His booking meant that he subsequently missed the first leg of the Ligue 1 promotion/ relegation play-off against AS Saint-Étienne.
Several bets on Wahi receiving a yellow card were reported to the French Football Federation (FFF), leading to the Ivorian being questioned by the relevant authorities within the anti-corruption unit. However, this did not result in any charges being brought, as the investigation is still ongoing; Wahi was subsequently authorised to travel to the United States to take part in the World Cup.
The former France youth international took part in Ivory Coast’s opener, a 1-0 win over Ecuador, however, he will not play any part in the game against Germany on Saturday, as confirmed by his federation.
The game will take place in Toronto, Canada, and Wahi has not been authorised to enter the country. As a result, he will remain in the US.
