Lazio have formally announced that their new coach is former Italy CT Gennaro Gattuso, several weeks after he was first spotted at their training ground.

The 48-year-old had been seen entering the Formello camp in Rome on June 3, where he discussed transfer strategy with the club directors and President Claudio Lotito.

The deal was seemingly agreed as far back as May 25.

However, the formal announcement was only made this afternoon.

“S.S. Lazio S.p.A. announces that it has appointed Mr. Gennaro Gattuso as Head Coach of the First Team.

“The Club warmly welcomes its new manager and is confident that his experience, professionalism, and determination will contribute to achieving the Club’s sporting objectives.”

It is believed that he put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Aquile, replacing Maurizio Sarri, who has taken on a new role with Atalanta.

This is Gattuso’s first job since he resigned as Italy coach on April 3, having failed to get through the World Cup qualifying play-offs with a defeat on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since his first management job at FC Sion in 2013, Rino went on to lead Palermo, OFI Crete, Pisa, Milan, Napoli, Valencia, Olympique Marseille and Hajduk Split.

He was named coach of Italy in June 2025, but lasted under a year, overseeing six wins and two defeats.
