England can sack Thomas Tuchel if his side fail to meet expectations at this summer’s World Cup.

The Three Lions boss took over as manager at the start of last year with the remit of winning the tournament.

His initial deal had been due to expire at the end of the finals in North America.

However, the FA handed Tuchel a two-year contract extension in February through to Euro 2028.

Chief executive Mark Bullingham has now confirmed there is a performance clause included in the deal.

It means that Tuchel could be replaced in the dugout if England endure a disappointing World Cup campaign.

A manager has already been sacked during the finals after Tunisia dismissed Sabri Lamouchi after their 5-1 loss to Sweden on Sunday.

The African nation have since appointed Herve Renard as his replacement.

Speaking to reporters at their Kansas City base, Bullingham explained: “There’s performance clauses in every single contract at the FA, but I’m not going into any detail of what they are.”

As for whether there is a break clause which Tuchel can activate, he added: “We can hold him to the contract.”

Tuchel has won all eight of his competitive matches as England boss without conceding a goal.

However, his side are yet to begin their World Cup campaign in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

The Three Lions face Croatia on Wednesday, with kick-off at 9pm live on talkSPORT.

Matches against Ghana and Panama will follow in Group L as they look to advance to the last 32.

Why was Tuchel’s deal extended?

Bullingham has also explained the decision to hand Tuchel an extension prior to the World Cup.

Had his deal not been extended, the German would be out of contract after the tournament.

However, the FA were keen to avoid any uncertainty over his future overshadowing England’s campaign.

Bullingham revealed: “The reality is he’s a top-level manager who would be in demand and we knew we had someone who was doing a really good job and we can’t just expect someone to wait around and just leave it and see how you go.

“That’s not the reality of life in any profession. We have someone doing a really good job, we thought we could sign him up for two more years, it’s a home tournament (Euro 2028) where the pressure is even bigger and we have a manager who has been there and done it.”

England will co-host Euro 2028 alongside the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales in two years’ time.
