Trent Alexander-Arnold is set for further disappointment with Denzel Dumfries poised to be Real Madrid’s starting right-back next season.
That’s the opinion of European football broadcaster Terry Gibson, who has predicted the England international to suffer from a lack of minutes at the Bernabeu.
Alexander-Arnold struggled for consistency in his opening season at the BernabeuGettyThe 27-year-old linked up with the Spanish giants last summer – featuring in 30 games across all competitions.
From his 21 LaLiga outings, he started on 14 occasions, and he is now braced for another battle to be named in the line-up following Jose Mourinho’s appointment.
It is understood that Inter Milan defender Dumfries will officially sign for Madrid in the near future after his £17.3million release clause was activated to become the club’s fourth arrival this window.
Alexander-Arnold’s summer was already dealt an early blow when he was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup.
He was then once again overlooked following Tino Livramento’s injury he picked up prior to the start of the tournament – with Trevoh Chalobah called up instead.
Ex-Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has already spoken of his fear that Mourinho‘s return to Madrid is bad news for the ex-Liverpool star.
What has been said about Alexander-Arnold’s future?
Now, ex-Tottenham forward Gibson has commented on what Alexander-Arnold can expect from his second season in Spain.
Speaking on the Weekend Sports Breakfast, Gibson said: “Dumfries, we’ve seen he’s been an excellent player over the years.
“We’ve seen that in the World Cup [for the Netherlands].
“So that’d be pressure for Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back position.
Netherlands international Dumfries is set to link up at Real after five years at the San SiroGetty“I suspect if Jose’s sanctioned these signings, that Dumfries will probably be ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the first XI’s picked at the start of the season.
“Bear in mind how far the Netherlands go in the World Cup, we know that affects the team selection in the early stages of the season.
“But I expect Dumfries to be first choice right-back.”
Who have Real Madrid signed this summer?
Real Madrid have so far confirmed three new signings – starting with the arrival of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal rising to £51.8m.
Manchester City legend Bernardo Silva was then snapped up on a free transfer as Real hijacked Barcelona’s move for the Portugal international.
Ibrahima Konate was the next player to be announced after the French centre-back run his contract down at Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold was a shock omission from England’s World Cup squad this summerAFPDespite Dumfries set to imminently join, Real remain in the market to bolster their squad after two consecutive campaigns with no major silverware.
Again turning to the Premier League, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is understood to be a key target.
It is believed that talks between the two clubs are set to commence.
The Blues are open to a sale, but value the Argentine World Cup winner at £120m.
