England will be hoping to finally bring football home this summer as they aim for long-awaited success at the 2026 World Cup.

The Three Lions have come incredibly close to doing so in recent major tournaments, having lost in the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and two European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024.

But under new manager Thomas Tuchel, they are hoping to go all the way and this song will be ringing around the country once again this summer.

When was Three Lions released?

‘Three Lions’ was first popularised in the late nineties but has since found a home as the song of choice for England supporters.

David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds first combined to become the sound of Euro ’96 after releasing their track that May.

Germany captain Jurgen Klinsmann, who helped mastermind a win over England en route to tournament glory, even told talkSPORT his country liked the song so much they sang it to celebrate.

And now, three decades later, it will still be blaring out of speakers across the nation as Tuchel’s men go for glory in North America.

The title relates to the Three Lions on England’s badge, while the 30 years of hurt was in relation to the country’s 1966 World Cup success – although that has now risen to 60 years of pain!

The tune was re-recorded as an unofficial anthem for the 1998 World Cup but found a revival 20 years later at the 2018 World Cup.

Since then, it has been used by England fans to cheer on Harry Kane and co at Euro 2020, the Qatar World Cup, Euro 2024 and it will soon be sung from the stands in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

‘Three Lions’ has been rewritten on several occasions since its release, including one with a Christmas twist ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

But with the words now back to the original, here’s a reminder of how to sing along when backing England this summer…

How to follow England vs Croatia

The Three Lions face Croatia tonight – Wednesday, June 17 – and kick-off is schedule for 9pm BST, 3pm local.

It is taking place at the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
