Atletico Madrid have decided to file a complaint to FIFA against Barcelona over their transfer approach for striker Julian Alvarez, COPE reports.
Los Colchoneros alleged that Barcelona are attempting to negotiate with Alvarez while he’s under contract, as the dispute between both clubs continues to grow.
The Argentine forward has a contract that runs until the summer of 2030, and Atletico have no plans to cash in anytime soon. They’re also in a strong negotiating position for the striker.
However, Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin says the club believes Barcelona have been in contact with Alvarez during what is known as a protected period of his contract.
That has forced the Spanish giants to seek action from football’s governing body.
Gil Marin said Atletico has a responsibility to protect the club’s interests and therefore intends to formally report Barcelona to FIFA.
“Our responsibility is to defend the interests of Atlético de Madrid, and that is why we are going to file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona for negotiating with a player under contract during the protected period,” he said.
The executive also expressed frustration over recent comments made by Alvarez regarding his future.
After Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria that secured their place in the World Cup knockout rounds, Alvarez took the chance to announce his intention to leave Atletico this summer.
With both clubs butting heads over his future, he suggested that a transfer could be the best solution for all parties before admitting that he wanted to achieve a personal dream.
His comments have fuelled ongoing speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona, and it didn’t go down well with his current employers, who are fighting tooth and nail to keep him at the club.
“I deeply regret his words,” Gil Marin said in response to Alvarez’s plea. “It wasn’t the day to make those statements – it was [Lionel] Messi’s day and the day of the Argentine national team, not Julián’s.
“They lie to us, to the player, to the media, and they lie to their own fans. They try to make everyone believe they can afford a transfer they’re not actually capable of.
“It’s not the first time Barcelona has acted this way, and the football world is perfectly aware of it. Last year, they did something very similar to Nico Williams and Athletic Club.
Gil Marin also admitted that Alvarez has spoken to the club about his dream, but Atletico remain adamant that any interested club will have to trigger his €500 million release clause.
